About Tainan and NCKU

Tainan is a city situated on the south-western coast of Taiwan. As well known, Tainan is the oldest and fourth largest city in Taiwan. Historically it is regarded as one of the earliest cities on Taiwan, when Dutch colonists developed a nearby port, called An-Ping. Now, it is known as one of the cultural capitals in Taiwan. The Tainan Science Park, where the world top made-to-order chips suppliers distributes in the global market. It houses the First Confucian School/Temple built 1665 on the island, the remains of the northern and southern gates of old city and countless other historical monuments. The population is approximately 751,902. Tainan today is no different from it is on the previous years. The industry here is based on agriculture, fishing, and tourism. Tainan is completely traditional in manner with hundreds of shrines and temples, which are the hallmark of the area. There are 166 temples and monasteries and more than 40 Christian and Catholic churches in the city. Meanwhile, Tainan is rapidly developing into a world-class city, due to Tainan’s focus on its development as both a high-technology center and international exhibition center.

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) was originally founded in 1931 by the government of Taiwan under the name of Tainan Technical College. Since then the school was renamed and elevated to a university in 1956. In final, in 1971, it was renamed the National Cheng Kung University. NCKU is located in the eastern part of Tainan city. It is situated across from the Tainan Railway Station, offering convenient transportation. The total area of the school is 172.629294 hectares including the Cheng-Kung, Sheng-Li, Kuang-Fu, Chien-Kuo, Tzu-Chiang, Ching- Yeh, Li-Hsing, Kuei-Jen and An-Nan campus with more than 60 departments in 8 colleges and some areas designated for dormitory use. It is one of the most spacious and beautiful university campuses in this country and it is also one of the leading universities in Taiwan for over 70 years. N.C.K.U. is now undergoing a significant campus-wide infrastructure face lifting. With new constructions abound, it is expected that when completed, the campus will have unsurpassed facilities for teaching, research and extension services. We are pleased to say that all this is in accordance with our mid and Long-Term Strategic Planning. In 2005, the university was chosen by the MOE as one of two universities to receive an annual grant of approximately US$ 51.5 million from 2006 to 2010. This grant is provided in an effort to achieve our goal of being internationally recognized as one of the top-10 universities in Asia and one of the top-150 universities worldwide. According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2009, NCKU was found to be one of the top 43 universities in the region and one of the top 281 universities in the world.
