Project description:

Scientific objectives (250 words max)

One of the research lines of our Group- AIRE (Atmósfera, clIma y Radiación en Extremadura // University of Extremadura) is the study of solar radiation field in the region of Extremadura (Southwestern Spain). This area presents particular interest for these studies because it receives very high insolation throughout the year.

In this framework, our goal is to describe and predict the solar radiation in terms of all its components: global, diffuse and direct.

The AIRE Research Group operates a radiometric station in Badajoz, the largest city in this region.

This station is well equipped with instruments to measure direct, global and diffuse solar radiation. The global and diffuse components of erythemal UV radiation are also measured, as well as long wave radiation. Besides these broadband instruments, a NILU-UV-6 multichannel radiometer provides information of spectral radiation in the UV interval in five bands.

The characterization of aerosols is achieved by a CIMEL 318 sunphotometer and sky state is determined by a SONA all sky camera.

Our team combines surface and satellite observations with empirical and physically-based models in order to advance in the understanding of the interactions between radiation and atmospheric constituents such as gases, aerosols and clouds, responsible for its attenuation.


The AIRE team closely collaborates with several research groups: INTA (National Institute for Aerospace Technology), GOA (Atmospheric Optics Group, University of Valladolid) and GFAT (Grupo de Física de la Atmósfera, University of Granada) in Spain; CGE (Geophysics Centre of Evora) in Portugal and the University of Tasmania in Australia.

  1. Project PI:

  • The PI is the person responsible for the instrument who acts as contact of the proposal. The PI must be affiliated with an institution from an EU member, associated state, or candidate state (information about eligible countries outside the EU can be found on the Cordis website). Participants from institutions outside EU member, associated, or candidate states are not eligible.

  • References: a short CV is only required for young researchers not having produced any publications yet.

  1. Project information:

  • Project title: please indicate.

  • Project acronym: The project acronym (20 characters max) identifies each calibration project. The acronym is standardized and based on the following format AEINS_CY-USTx-YR_yyy. Please modify/replace as follows:

AEINS: please do not modify Infrastructure installation code (AELOA / AEGOA / AEIZA), it will be updated internally.

CY: please insert country code where user site is located (use max 2 characters: ISO country code).

UST: please replace name of user site where instrument is deployed (use max 3 characters).

x: please insert user calibration number (1=first calibration within ACTRIS, 2=second calibration, 3= third calibration, etc.)

YR: please insert the year of desired calibration start (11=2011, 12=2012, etc.).

yyy: please do not modify overall AE calibration number, it will be updated internally.

  • Instrument type: please indicate.

  • Atmospheric station: indicate information on the measurement station where the instrument is deployed for measurements.

  • TNA type: distinction must be made between first time and recurrent user. Specify if the planned project concerns a first time calibration of the instrument or instrument recalibration.

The choice of the AERONET-EUROPE host infrastructure (CNRS-LOA / GOA-UVA / Izana) selected for calibration is decided internally and will be made by the infrastructure contact person based on different conditions, e.g., distance between the calibration centre and the user site, instrument type, weather conditions, any pre-existing scientific agreements. The main contact person for all requests for AERONET-EUROPE is CNRS-LOA (actris.calibration@univ-lille1.fr)

  • Preferred calibration period: indicate your preferences. The average duration of a calibration is approximately six weeks for both first time and recurrent calibration.




  1. Scientific objectives:

  1. In case of first time user: explain the scientific objectives and measurement needs motivating the request for TNA.

  2. In case of recurrent calibration: the AERONET program provides a long-term, continuous and readily accessible public domain database of aerosol optical, microphysical and radiative properties for aerosol research and characterization, validation of satellite retrievals, and synergism with other databases. As recalibrations are recommended and requested within a 12-month period, please indicate the following scientific objectives: “Recalibration within 12-month period as requested by AERONET.

Note that the selection of users is based on scientific merit and made according to the following criteria: originality and scientific quality of the proposal, interest to scientific community, geographical location of user site, and available instrumentation at atmospheric station.

  1. Estimated project costs:

If TNA is granted, instrument calibration and basic maintenance are free of charge. However, instrument transport is not included and must be covered by the institution of the PI.
