The Mighty Atom Project

Goal:

Read and annotate a chapter from the Bill Bryson text, “A Short History of Nearly Everything”, demonstrating reading comprehension and writing goals as set by the Common Core State Standards for Literacy in Science (standards and a rubric will be provided).

Note:

The project can be adjusted for both slow and advanced students. See below for details.

Overview:

In the first part of the project, the students will read the attached chapter and summarize each paragraph into a single sentence. This sentence should identify the key concept of the paragraph. A sentence summary worksheet will be provided for this activity. Class discussion will occur around key paragraphs.

In the second part of the project, the student will use the sentences and chapter text to create an edited, summarized version of the text. The resultant article should have continuity and flow, be short (<2500 words), and be grammatically correct. Both rough drafts and final drafts will be collected. Included at the end of the summary should be a one paragraph reflection of the author’s purpose for including any one section of the chapter (as broken down into homework assignments.)

In the third and final part of the project, students will complete a quiz on the reading, with emphasis being placed on comprehension of the text.


The Text:

Chapter 9 of Bill Bryson’s, “A Short History of Nearly Everything”, has been divided into 53 paragraphs:

Scope of Reading:

1) Most students: Read, annotate, and summarize paragraphs 1-41

2) Advanced students: Read, annotate, and summarize paragraphs 1-53

3) Slower students: Read, annotate, and summarize key paragraphs only (total of 24 paragraphs)


Timeline:

Start project concurrent with beginning of atomic theory unit.

Do you believe in reincarnation? Read and discuss ¶ 4-5 from the text in order to bring an atomic perspective to this question. Discuss how ¶4 and 5 are introducing a key concept - that atoms live forever - and how you might summarize that in one sentence.


Annotate ¶ 10-17

Discuss how history has shaped our view of the atomic structure; Using ¶ 10, a ¶ that contains a lot of history, model how to cut it down for summary.

Annotate ¶ 18-26 and ¶ 27-31.

Discuss (1) what protons, neutrons, and electrons are, (2) How these particles are arranged in an atom, (3) and why you're basically empty space. Discuss author’s intent.

Annotate ¶ 32-41 (and ¶ 42 – 53 for those that choose to do so)

Computer Lab: Download "The Mighty Atom_Master Copy" and begin editing. You'll need to edit the document using 'track changes' which you will learn how to do in class.

Rough draft will be saved at end of period.

Computer Lab: Create final draft of the summary, being mindful of the rubric. Write the 1-paragraph reflection on author’s intent for including any one section of the text, as broken out into the individual paragraph homework assignments. This is the last day in class to work on the assignment.

Final draft due in the next class. Bring a PRINT copy to class

Writing: Establish and maintain a formal style and objective tone while attending to the norms and conventions of the discipline in which they are writing.

Writing: Use varied transitions and sentence structures to link the major sections of the text, create cohesion, and clarify the relationships among ideas and concepts.
