Aims and Objectives:

On completion of the module the student will be able to understand how to apply the more advanced principles of heat and mass transfer and turbo machinery to practical engineering applications.


Content:

Heat & Mass Transfer:
  • Review of heat transfer fundamentals.

  • Heat exchanger types and performances.

  • Extended surfaces and applications to heat exchanger design.

  • Radiant heat transfer; cosine law and configuration factors.


  • Unsteady heat transfer


Turbo machinery:
  • Momentum and energy equations for turbo-machines

  • Radial, axial and mixed flow stages

  • Impulse and reaction, degree of reaction


  • Stage loading and flow coefficients

  • Approximate off-design performance

  • Cascade performance, deviation and total pressure loss, predicting isentropic efficiency

  • Small stage efficiency

  • Mean line design




Pre-requisites

ME2011: Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics

ME3011: Advanced thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics


Format:



2 hours per week lectures over 11 weeks,

1 hour per week tutorials over 11 weeks

2 x 3 hours laboratory classes


Assessment:


80% Examination

20% Laboratory reports.
