MGHD Foreign Language Proficiency (FLP) Form

In order to graduate from MGHD, each candidate must successfully complete a foreign language proficiency examination consisting of reading and speaking about current affairs. Proficiency exams are administered by Georgetown’s language departments. For the purposes of this graduation requirement, proficiency is defined as the ability to use the foreign language in a clearly participatory manner and with sufficient fluency and accuracy to read about and discuss political, economic and international issues. The linguistic skills necessary to function at this level include the ability to narrate and describe with paragraph-length connected discourse in past, present and future time frames. All students will take a placement exam at Orientation to determine whether further coursework is needed prior to taking the language proficiency examination.

Please note: Students who do not pass the foreign language proficiency examination cannot receive their degree. Therefore, it is vital that each applicant’s self-assessment be as accurate as possible.

TO APPLICANT: The language described on this form should be the non-native language in which you are most proficient and which you will use to pass the proficiency exam. If you are a non-native speaker of English, you may choose to use English as your proficiency language, or another language that is not your native tongue. If you are bilingual, you may choose one language as your native language and use your second language as your proficiency language.

  1. Native language:

e. Pronunciation

f. Writing

  1. Please check the box that best describes your level of preparation, using the definition of “proficiency” outlined in the box above as a guideline:

I believe I possess a sufficient degree of proficiency to pass the proficiency exam without further coursework.

With additional study during my two years, I believe I will achieve a sufficient degree of proficiency to pass the exam.

I need additional language study and experience prior to enrolling at MGHD. In order to strengthen my language

proficiency prior to August enrollment, I plan to:
