Professor Colin Snape

Clean coal technologies. Involved in coal science for 30 years and recognition includes the 2006 Storch Award from the American Chemical Society. Gas clean-up technologies: investigating adsorbents for the removal of Hg. Combustion: additives for improved burn-out. Coal carbonisation for coke production: sourcing PAH emissions and fate of plastics using stable carbon and hydrogen isotopes; combining high temperature in-situ 1H NMR and rheometry to understand fluidity development. Characterisation - solid state NMR and analytical applications of hydropyrolysis.

Dr Ed Lester

Investigating supercritical water mediated removal of carbon from fly ash to meet specifications for current markets and is linking enhanced coal-bed methane recovery to CO2 storage.

Professor John Patrick

Research interests range from coal characterisation to various aspects of coal conversion, cleaner coal technology, active carbons, carbon materials including carbon-based electrodes, carbon/carbon composites and graphites, energy and the environment.

Professor Mercedes Maroto-Valer

R&D programmes supporting the power industry though research on PF combustion, gasification, and gas clean-up. Leads and is involved in major EU research programmes on mercury control and trace metals. Other active programmes are in the area of recovery, beneficiation and utilisation of combustion by-products.

Synthesis and development of porous metal-organic framework materials for high capacity and reversible carbon (CO2, volatile organic molecule) storage and reactivity.

Professor Colin Snape

Prof Snape and colleagues in the Nottingham Fuel and Energy Centre have developed a wide portfolio of projects on CO2 capture technologies and biomass co-utilisation with many industrial and European collaborators. Bench and pilot-scale facilities exist for co-firing and the Centre has a close relationship with E.ON UK and will be the lead academic partner for clean coal technology in the recently established E.ON UK University partnership.
