Reference Resources

A good place to start if you don’t know anything about your topic. Resources noted here are multisport in nature. Other reference resources exist that focus on individual sports such as baseball. Additionally, the Reference Collection has other items such as directories of college athletic programs, scholarship guides, and guides to the rules of sports. The librarians at the reference desk can direct you to a suitable resource.

The Reference Collection is located on the second floor of the Richard J. Daley Library. Reference resources may not be removed from the library.

Finding Books

UICCAT is our online catalog that tells you what books we own.

“Browse Subject” searching for “sports” will yield general works on the topic. More specific items can be found by searching terms such as “Aquatic sports,” “Nationalism and sports” or “Olympics,” or the names of individual sports such as “Gymnastics” or “Swimming.” Try related terms like “Athletes” or “Games” as well.

Boolean searching may also be effective. In this way “sports” or “athletics” may be combined with other words that describe your topic to narrow down your search, e.g., “sports and psychology.”

Check the call number and location in UICCAT to find out where each item is located. Physical education and sports resources will be found under the call numbers starting with GV.

Finding Articles

Electronic indexes may be found through the Library’s web pages by clicking on “Resources.” and then clicking on the alphabetical list under “Indexes and Databases.”

Listed below are a selection of useful databases for sports and athletics. Other databases are available that include a smaller number of relevant citations. Consult with the librarians at the Reference Desk for more advice.

Reader’s Guide Abstracts is available online. This database is also available in print as Readers’ Guide to Periodical Literature. AI3 .R48, Index tables

Sociological Abstracts is available online. It documents all areas of sociology, including sports and their role in society. This database is also available in print. HM1 .S67, Index tables

ERIC is a comprehensive database of resources in education, including numerous items in physical education. It is available online. It also corresponds to the print index Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE). Z5813 .C8, Index tables

Physical Education Index. 1970-present. This index is available online and also in print. Z6121 .P54, Index tables

Once you have the citations, journal articles can be located by searching UICCAT by the name of the journal to see if UIC subscribes to it. (We do not subscribe to every journal you may locate in an index).
