Co-firing secondary fuels in power generation: from fuel characterization to full scale testing”

This 35th IFRF Topic Oriented Technical Meeting will bring secondary fuel specialists together to discuss a current FP7 EU funded project entitled “Demonstration of Large Scale Biomass Co-Firing and Supply Chain Integration - DEBCO”.

DEBCO is in its third year and is being carried out by seventeen European partners, most of them IFRF Members. Under the terms of the project, the IFRF is organising two TOTeMs in which project members may disseminate their findings outside of the partner consortium. TOTeM 35 is the first of the two events and will be followed in 2011 by an event in Poland.

DEBCO is concerned with development and demonstration of innovative approaches to the co-utilisation of biomass with coal for large-scale electricity production and/or CHP, at more competitive costs and/or increased energy efficiency. The main focus is on the co-utilisation of pure and untreated biomass types such as wood and straw, available in many European regions and localities. Besides untreated biomass assortments, more and more production residues, such as bark, saw dust, olive residues, etc., as well as bio-waste materials, e.g. sewage and paper sludge, waste wood, and solid recovered fuels (SRF) have also become of interest due to their low, neutral, or even negative fuel costs.

However, because their interrelations are not yet fully understood, co-utilisation of such fuel types often brings a greater potential risk of operational problems.

Whilst TOTeM 35 will be focused on fundamental aspects of co-firing and methodological approaches for studying the different co-firing aspects in utility boilers, the second event at the end of the project will look at full-scale, long term assessment and monitoring of boiler and Air Pollution Control Device performances, and on validation of comprehensive CFD models with specific focus on the combustion behaviour of high biomass shares and a multi-fuel configurations.

TOTeM 35 topics for discussion:

  • Biomass and bio-waste production, supply and quality control;

  • Biomass and secondary fuels characterisation;

  • Assessment of solid bio-fuels co-firing characteristics in lab and pilot scale;

  • Ash related problems: slagging, fouling and corrosion, fine particulate generation;

  • Kinetics and phenomenological modelling of different phenomena;

  • Full-scale co-firing tests: methodologies and procedures for planning, executing, analysing, reporting

Key participants:

Traditionally in an IFRF TOTeM, each of the selected sub topics is addressed by an invited expert – in this case the key participants will be DEBCO partner representatives flanked by experts external to the project. In addition

  • Representatives from utilities and power plant managers

  • Representatives from boiler manufacturers, burner suppliers and other equipment suppliers

  • Secondary fuels suppliers and supply chain stakeholders

  • Secondary fuel users (process engineers and technical managers) from various industries

  • Researchers from universities, research institutes and national laboratories

are warmly encouraged to attend, and if appropriate, to report on relevant work in progress by means of a Poster contribution.
