Series XXXIX. Team/League Cases, 1904-1917


Scope note:


This series contains team and league cases on which the National Commission decided. When a team had a problem that could not be resolved by its league, it would be sent to Herrmann and the National Commission. The case, depending how serious, would be investigated and a decision would be made by the three-man Commission. Each case listed below contains correspondence from the individuals involved (presidents, managers, etc.) and from NC officials. The cases are arranged alphabetically.

Series XL. Federal League Cases, 1913-1922


Scope note:


This series comprises material related to cases involving the Federal League and Organized Baseball between 1913 and 1922. NC Investigation of Federal League consists of correspondence from baseball officials who wrote Herrmann and the National Commission about the threat that the Federal League posed to baseball. This material is arranged chronologically. NC Investigation of Federal League Teams consists of correspondence from baseball officials who reported day-to-day situation of a Federal League team. For example, Barney Dreyfuss, President of Pittsburgh/NL, wrote to Herrmann about the Pittsburgh Federal League team and his concerns as a baseball magnate. Dreyfuss's correspondence includes attendance, ticket sales, and overall fan support in relation to the Pittsburgh/FL team. Also, Chicago/FL-Informer Reports contains letters from an employee at Weeghman Park who was paid to spy on the Chicago/FL team by Charles H. Thomas, President of Chicago/NL. Major League Team Testimony of Federal League Interference contains reports given by AL and NL team officials claiming that the Federal League was in the practice of stealing players from their clubs. These claims were used to bring suit against the Federal League. Peace Conference contains correspondence and newspaper articles that pertain to the Federal League's attempt to make peace with the AL and NL. Federal League v. Organized Baseball contains material regarding the case of the same name, which was the first case between the Federal League and AL/NL. Baltimore/FL v. Organized Baseball contains case material from the suit the Baltimore/FL team filed against the AL and NL. This sub-series also contains the counter suit the AL and NL filed against the Baltimore/FL team. Documents Used In Federal League Cases contains documents and material used in the cases between the Federal League and organized baseball. Player Cases Involving the Federal League consists of player cases between the Federal League and organized baseball. When a player "jumped" his contract from an AL or NL team to a Federal League team a claim would be made to the National Commission. This material is arranged alphabetically by player's name, followed by teams involved, additional information, and date(s). Two of the more prominent cases involved Armando Marsans and George H. "Chief" Johnson. Other Cases Involving the Federal League contains cases between a team associated with organized baseball and one from the Federal League. Officials Correspondence… contains correspondence from baseball officials regarding the Federal League and the cases listed.
