Series XLI. Cases Related to World War I, 1917-1918

Scope note:

This series contains material related to the cases caused by World War I. The Work or Fight/Selective Service Case was the main case between Organized Baseball and the U.S. Government. When the U.S. declared war on the Central Powers, a draft was initiated that called for every male (within a certain age range) to fight. Many of the baseball players during this time were eligible for the draft. The National Commission chose to fight this claiming that a baseball player was a legitimate profession and should not have to fight. Also during this time, in an effort to finance the war in Europe, the U.S. Government chose to tax the revenue created by baseball.

Series XLIII. Player and Officials Cases and Reinstatements, 1903-1919

Scope note:

This series is made up of cases and reinstatements of players and officials, which the National Commission decided between 1903 and 1919. One of the primary roles of the National Commission was to settle disputes between players and team officials. Player cases occurred when a player, unhappy with his situation, would file a complaint against the team(s) to his league. When the league was unable to reach a decision with his claim it would be sent to the National Commission. The National Commission would investigate this claim, which would then become a case, and decide the outcome of the matter. Sometimes a case could involve many teams and many leagues. A reinstatement would occur when a player or official was suspended for a period of time then reinstated into organized baseball. The cases and reinstatements are arranged alphabetically by name followed by team(s), league(s), additional information, case number in parenthesis, and date(s).
