A heat exchanger transfers heat from one fluid to another. Without heat exchangers, many of the products that we use today would not be possible. Without a radiator (which is a heat exchanger), vehicles would quickly overheat. Without an evaporator (another heat exchanger), you would not have the comfort of air conditioning in your home. Because of the importance of heat exchangers in the design of so many processes and systems, it is important that the engineer possess at least a basic knowledge of the types of heat exchangers and how they operate. This course covers the fundamentals of eat exchangers, including the different types and how they operate.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Types of heat exchanger construction, including tube and shell and plate type.

  • Heat exchanger flow-through design types, including parallel flow, counter flow and cross flow, as well as their relative efficiencies.

  • Calculation of log mean temperature difference and heat transfer rate.

  • System efficiency optimization methods, including multi-pass and regenerative heat exchangers.

  • Common heat exchanger applications, including steam preheaters and condensors.
