I. GENERAL INFORMATION


The aim of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is to provide professional training and at the same time to participate actively in applied and theoretical research. The program is designed to encourage the students to become creative and resourceful. In its 18th year, the department is already capable of providing fully equipped laboratories for the given courses. The development of some laboratories is still in progress. Successful candidates are awarded the degree of Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.


The graduate program, which was initiated in 1977, provides specialization in the fields of solid-state devices, quantum electronics, microwaves and antennas, network theory, circuits and systems, power systems, high voltage and computer engineering. The candidates fulfilling the University requirements will be awarded the degree of Master of Science (M.S.) and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

B.S. (Bachelor of Science)

M.S. (Master of Science)

Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy).


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

For B.S. (Bachelor of Science), students are selected by National University Entrance Examination (Student Placement Exam, OSS). About 60 students are admitted each year.


For M.S. and Ph.D., the university and department announce its own requirements for selecting students. Certain exams are applied to the applicants before they can be placed to M.S and Ph.D. programmes.


LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

The official language of instruction is English. Students who fail to pass an English test must attend a one-year English preparatory school and pass it before taking the department courses.


B.S. (BACHELOR OF SCIENCE)

Normal duration is 4 years. Students must take and pass all necessary courses and reach a minimum GPA (Grade Point Average) of 2.0/4.0 before he/she can graduate.


M.S. (MASTER OF SCIENCE)

The students will be required to prepare and orally defend a thesis based on their research. Students require approximately two years to complete the Master of Science degree.


PH.D. (DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY)

The Doctorate degree requires course work and thesis research. The students will conduct original research and prepare a thesis, then make an oral defense of their completed research. Students require about four years beyond the Master's degree to complete a Ph.D. program.


EXAMINATION REGULATIONS

For B.S. , the examination system for any course is normally -but not limited- two midterm examination (30% each) and a written final exam (40%). The instructor has flexibility to give midterm tests in different forms such as written test, project, take home test, homework assignments etc.


SUMMER TRAINING

There are two summer training course that all B.S. students are required to take as part of graduation requirements. These are not included in undergraduate curriculum since they do not carry any credits. The descriptions for these summer training courses are included in the departmental course catalog.

II. RESEARCH FACILITIES AND LABORATORIES



At present the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department of Engineering Faculty at Gaziantep University has eleven active laboratories available for training and research.


1. BASIC ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY

This laboratory is intended to familiarize students with the fundamental procedures of electrical laboratory measurements. In addition to demonstrating the uses of oscilloscopes, wattmeters, bridge circuits, voltmeters and ammeters, experiments are designed to illustrate basic electrical circuit theories for d.c. single- and three-phase a.c. linear circuits and non-linear circuits.


2. ELECTRONICS LABORATORY

This laboratory is well equipped both for undergraduate and postgraduate studies at low power in the audio and radio frequency spectrum from medium broadcast frequencies up to low microwave frequencies and in pulse technology up to the nanosecond region. In conjunction with this laboratory, a printed-circuit room complete with a camera, photoresist spinner and U.V. sources provides services for printed-circuit design.


3. ELECTROMECHANICAL ENERGY CONVERSION LABORATORY

This laboratory is equipped for the experiments done by undergraduates. Rotating a.c. and d.c. machinery with a rating of up to 5 kVA as well as various single phase and three-phase transformers are available. 10 sets each having various voltmeters, ammeters, wattmeters, oscilloscopes and plotters are employed in the experiments.


4. MICROWAVE AND ANTENNA LABORATORY

This laboratory, serving both graduate and undergraduate students, is well equipped with instruments and components for measuring basic antenna parameters and testing microwave components in the frequency range of 1-18 GHz. Spectrum measurements up to 40 GHz can also be performed.


5. LOGICAL DESIGN LABORATORY

This laboratory is used both for teaching and research purposes. The main areas of activity are logical design, switching circuits, building and developing parts of digital computers on bread-board systems. The laboratory is also equipped with test and design instruments and low and high frequency oscilloscopes. There are also ten complete sets of microprocessors.


6. TELECOMMUNICATIONS LABORATORY

The telecommunications laboratory serves for teaching the basic rules of telecommunications to undergraduate students. There are various kits to introduce analog and digital communications systems to students. And, there are digital communication kits which are supported by computer simulation. In addition to these, there is a telephone network which is supported by computer simulation. There are also Amplitude and Frequency Modulated communication kits and Pulse Code Modulation kits to introduce modulation techniques.


7. CONTROL SYSTEMS LABORATORY

This laboratory is equipped with industrial control systems and various measuring devices. There are also pneumatic and electronic control teaching kits to set up different control systems. There is a demonstrative set containing servo and stepper motors. And a microprocessor set to control different input and outputs of a system. There is a small-scale demonstrative Programmable Control Logic set.. Additionally, a computer controlled hydraulic and pneumatic set is used for introducing computer controlled systems to the students.


8. MICROPROCESSOR LABORATORY

This laboratory has been established both for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The laboratory is equipped with 10 sets of 6802 based (8-bit), and 10 sets of 80286 based (16-bit) microprocessor training systems. The latter system also includes an applications module which permits microcomputer control experimentation. The laboratory has 5 PCs to develop assembly language programs for 80286 systems.


9. HIGH VOLTAGE RESEARCH LABORATORY

This laboratory is used by both undergraduate and graduate students. The sources are 0-60 kV DC. 0-35 kV AC, 0-60 kV impulse (Cable generator), 0-10 kV DC generators. The measurement equipment are 35 and 100 kV Resistive Voltage Divider (RVD), 100 kV capacitive voltage divider, Sphere-Sphere, Point-Plane and Plane-Plane types of electrodes. A fast photographing technique can also be applied in different types of cells.


10. POWER ELECTRONICS LABORATORY

This laboratory is intended for undergraduate students to familiarise them with rectifiers, thyristor controlled rectifiers, inverters, a.c. voltage controllers, choppers and static switches. The laboratory offers many facilities for research and postgraduate studies.


11. INSTRUMENT MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR CENTER

This center is equipped with general testing and measuring instruments and is involved with the maintenance, repair and calibration of the instruments used in the laboratories.
