Northwest High School

At Northwest High School, we are committed to providing every student with the academic knowledge, interpersonal skills and self-discipline needed to be a successful member of our community and an active life long learner.

In our commitment to excellence, we envision a school where our students are committed to their own education, are taught to respect themselves and others, are enriched by diversity, and are helped to develop to their full potential.

Dear Students,

On behalf of the faculty and staff, I welcome you to the 2012-13 school year. Whether you are new to Northwest or a returning upperclassman, I hope this will be your most successful year of high school ever. I encourage each of you to get involved with our school and make a difference every day.

This agenda planner is divided into two parts- the NWHS student handbook and a weekly planner:

• The student handbook contains information about our academic programs, career technical center, attendance, guidance services, athletics, clubs and activities, and general information. There is also a section on Board policies and procedures.

• The weekly planner is designed to help students keep track of assignments and provide tips for school success.

This agenda planner has been developed for you. If used well, it will help you stay organized and will answer many of your questions. You need to carry it with you at all times during the school day.

Again, best wishes as you begin the new school year.

Thanks for all you do, take pride in your school and…GO KNIGHTS!

Northwest High School is a comprehensive high school offering a wide range of academic and elective classes. Students may choose an honor or advanced level four-year college prep program or a combination career center and college prep program.

What’s new for 2012-13:

• New information on Northwest Online

• Updated Requirements for Graduation.

In 2010-2011, NWHS successfully transitioned from the block schedule to the seven bell day. Because of this change, there are different graduation requirements for students depending on the year they will graduate. Here are the different requirements depending on year of graduation:

• 22 total credits for the class of 2013

• 21 total credits for the class of 2014 and 2015

For our upperclassmen, here’s how the graduation requirements look over the next three years:

Temporary Alternative to the Ohio Core Opt-Out Program

The newly mandated Ohio Core Curriculum is more rigorous than in the past. This increase in rigor is purposeful with the ultimate goal of better preparing students for college and career readiness. Teachers will begin using the adopted Common Core and State content standards which will require more from students and make some of these courses more difficult to complete. A major change is in the content area of mathematics. Starting with the graduating class of 2014 students will be required to earn four math credits to graduate from high school – completing at a minimum the Algebra II curriculum. The Opt-Out program will allow students in the graduating classes of 2014 through 2017 who struggle in mathematics an opportunity to graduate with only earning three credits in this content area. Student requests to participate in this program must be submitted in writing and approved by school officials. Interested students must talk to their counselors to get more information about this program.

Exemption to the Physical Education Graduation Requirement

Starting School Year 2012-2013 students can be exempted from earning ½ credit of physical education and still meet the requirements of graduation from high school. Students who successfully complete two full seasons of sanctioned interscholastic athletics, marching band, cheerleading offered within the district or two full years in junior reserve officer training corps (NJROTC) may apply and be exempted from taking and completing the two required physical education courses needed to earn their diploma. These two seasons or years in the junior reserve officer training corps must be successfully completed throughout a student’s 9th, 10th and 11th grade school years. Students must complete and submit a Physical Education Waiver Form to their counselor to be considered for this exemption. Interested students must talk to their counselors to get more information about this opportunity.

Ohio Core – Fine Arts Requirement for Graduating Classes of 2014 and Beyond

The Ohio Core requires two semesters or the equivalent of one year of fine arts for students to graduate unless the student is enrolled in and completes a course of study in career technical education. Students may complete the coursework in any grades seven to twelve. Students who do not earn a fine arts credit in high school can now use fine arts courses successfully completed in grades 7 and 8 to meet high school graduation requirements. Students must talk to their counselors to get more information about this change.
