Este libro contiene la transcripción y un análisis histórico y lingüístico del "Arte de la lengua jeneral del Cusco llamada Quichua". Como no lleva fecha ni nombre de autor, para ubicar el documento en el espacio y en el tiempo se ha considerado e interpretado la evidencia paleográfica y ortográfica que sugiere que este manuscrito es una copia hecha por dos copistas en el siglo XVIII de un orginal del XVII. De hecho, la evidencia lingüística, especialmente algunos fenómenos fonológicos y morfológicos corroboran esta hipótesis, con lo cual tendríamos aquí la gramática del quichua del Ecuador más antigua conocida hasta el presente. La lengua descrita es una variante del quichua que muestra muchos fenómenos lingüísticos del quichua del Ecuador sin poder adscribirse a una determinada zona; y a pesar de mostrar algunas características del cuzqueño al comienzo, la mayor parte de la gramática describe lo que se podría denominar una "lengua general de Quito".
This book contains the transcription and a historical and linguistic analysis of the "Arte de la lengua jeneral del Cusco llamada Quichua". As the document has neither an author's name nor a date on it, it had to be located in space and time by the palaeographic and orthographic evidence of the text itself which suggests that the document is a copy made by two copyists in the 18th century on the basis of a 17th century document. This hypothesis is supported by linguistic evidence, especially phonological and morphological phenomena, which allow us the assumption that this is the oldest known grammar of Ecuadorian Quichua currently held. The Quichua of the "Arte" shows many characteristics of Ecuadorian Quichua, but it is not possible to adscribe it to one area in particular; and despite of showing some traits of Cuzco Quechua in the beginning, it mostly describes what could be called a "general language of Quito".
