25 Jan 1930 Oneida Woman, aged 78, is Hostess at Party

Mrs Lucretia Knaggs celebrated her seventy-fifth birthday Tuesday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs Joe Skinandor. Mrs Knaggs was born in Milwaukee at that time when there were only two buildings in Milwaukee, one of them owned by her father Jonathan Fields.

She remembers when her grandfather was scalped by the Indians. He did not die and his wife hid him in a marsh and fed him with pieces of meat from a dead cow until help came. Mrs Knaggs was six years old when they left Milwaukee for Friendship. She married Simon Knaggs of Eden, England who died about forty years ago from the effects of a rattle-snake bite.

27 Mar 1930 Marker will Locate Old House in Oshkosh

A marker will be placed on the site of the first house to be built by a white man in Oshkosh - if the controversy over the location of the site is settled.

The question arose immediately after the Winnebago County Archeological and Historical Society announced intentions of marking the site.

Members of the society, backed by history books of the Fox River valley, maintain that Webster Stanley built the first log cabin near the mouth of the river at the foot of Bowen Street in 1836.

Mrs Marguerite Sohay and her relatives maintain that their ancestor, James Knaggs, built the first house. They fix 1827-1829 as the approximate date of his arrival here.

Members of the society point out, however, that Knaggs built his house in what was originally West Algoma and that he was three quarters French and a quarter Oneida Indian, making him ineligible for the historical honors.

Oshkosh was incorporated as a village in 1846 and became a city in 1853. The Archeological and Historical Society has planned to unveil and dedicate the marker June 14, Flag day. An effort will be made to have Gov Walter Kohler as the main speaker.
