ECE 181: Physical and Fourier Optics Spring 2012

Office Hours Wednesday 3:00 – 5:00, or by arrangement, in room 3405 Jacobs Hall (EBU1)

Texts: On reserve at the Science and Engineering Library.

Primary: Fundamentals of Photonics, B.E.A. Saleh and M. C. Teich – 2nd edition, Chapters 1-4.

Supplemental:Optics, Eugene Hecht, 4th Edition, 2002.

Lectures: Tuesday/Thursday, 3:30 - 4:50pm, HSS (Humanities and Social Science) Room 1315

Teaching Assistants: Kevin Book and Yi Xu

Labs: Student Photonics Lab, EBU1, Room B706 (x44819);

2 hour labs on alternate weeks in groups of 3-4, timing to be determined

Lab Manager: Dr. Peter Ilinykh

Homeworks: Assigned Thursdays, due following Thursday in class unless otherwise stated.

Grading:

20% Homework

20% Labs (participation and 5 shared reports)

25% Midterm (6th week during lecture time)

35% Final (Monday June 11, 3:00 – 6:00 p.m)

Course Syllabus (subject to pace modification):

Week 1 Introduction: Ray optics (no lab)

Reflection/refraction, index of refraction, Fermat’s principal, Snell’s Law, waveguides.

Week 2 Simple thin-lens imaging Lab 1: Imaging Properties of Simple Lenses

Basic ray tracing, real and virtual images, lateral and axial magnification

Week 3 Multi-lens imaging (no lab)

Telephoto lenses, thick lenses, aberrations, matrix formalisms

Week 4 Wave optics Lab 2: Introduction to Computer Aided Lens Design

Derivation of the wave equation, Plane and spherical solutions

Week 5 Diffraction and interference (no lab)

Diffraction gratings, plane wave interference, interferometers

Week 6 Light propagation through isotropic media Lab 3: Wavefront Interference & Interferometers

Midterm (Tuesday); Fresnel & Frauenhofer propagation integrals

Week 7 Scalar diffraction theory (continued) (no lab)

K-space formalism, Fourier optics

Week 8 Fourier Optics (continued) Lab 4: Wavefront Propagation & Diffraction

Diffraction limits to imaging

Week 9 Advanced imaging systems (no lab)

Microscopes, Spectrometers, and Telescopes

Week 10 Laser optics Lab 5: Prism and Grating Spectrometers

Gaussian beam propagation
