Introducing the topic

Was and Were indicate the past of am, is and are

Example:

I was a farmer.

We were at home.

We use “Was” after I, He, She and It. We use “Were” after You, They, You and We.

Before beginning activities, it might help students to review or learn from frequency words, such as, yesterday, 2 years ago, last month, last week.

Activity Ideas::

  1. Conversion: Present to Past:

                1. Make a list of sentences using ‘To Be’ in Simple Present with the class. You can write the sentences on the board or the students can do it.

  • I am in class today.

Mary is at the library today.

The classroom is cold today.

                1. Have students write those sentences in the past tense.

              1. What Were You Like?

                1. Have students work in small groups and talk about how they were when they were 10 years old.

                2. They should write sentences and report to the class.

                3. Model your own experience.

  • When I was 10 years old I was strong.

I was short.

I was shy.

  1. NEGATIVE PAST TENSE: Teach them using examples on how to use the negative form and have them write the sentences of the exercise above in negative form.

  1. Practice questions asking: “Where were you last night?” “Where were you yesterday morning?” “Where were you yesterday afternoon?”

Negative Form with Past Tense

Introducing the topic

  • For the negative form of past tense verbs, we use didn’t (did not) + the base for of all verbs, regular and irregular.

  • DID is an auxiliary verb that indicates past tense. It doesn’t translate to Spanish.

Activity Ideas:

              1. Conversions:

                1. Use old exercises, newspaper, comics or articles that have the past tense and have your students change the sentences to negative.

              1. Changes:

                1. Ask the learners if these things happened or didn’t happen after they moved to this city.

                2. Have students raise their hands both for if they did or didn’t happen. This way you can pick people to answer first who have the structure down, then people who need some practice.

  • Example:

Who found a job?

I found a job. Or, I didn’t find a job.

Register for English classes.

Rent an apartment.

Buy a car.

Get a driver’s license.

Visit a museum.

See a relative.

Buy clothes.

Go to the bank.

Would like

Introducing the topic:

- We use Would Like to express things that we want to do.

- I Would Like is the same as I Want, but I Would Like is more polite.

- Would is almost always contracted with pronouns in every day speaking.

- The difference between I’d like to go and I like to go is sometimes difficult to hear.

Teach using the following examples:

I am hungry.

I want a sandwich.

I would like a sandwich.

I am cold.

I want a jacket.

I would like a jacket.

We use “Would like” with all the pronouns. “Would like” is the same for every subject.

The contraction of “I would like” is “I‘d like”.

The word “WOULD” is an auxiliary. It doesn’t translate to Spanish. “WOULD” indicates Conditional Tense (or Potential Tense).
