Part II — Definitions CHAPTER 2 DEFINITIONS SECTION R201 GENERAL R201.1 Scope. Unless otherwise expressly stated, the following words and terms shall, for the purposes of this code, have the meanings indicated in this chapter. * * * HIGH VELOCITY HURRICANE ZONE (HVHZ). This zone consists of Broward and Dade counties. * * * Part III — Building Planning and Construction CHAPTER 3 BUILDING PLANNING SECTION R301 DESIGN CRITERIA R301.1 Design. Buildings and structures, and all parts thereof, shall be constructed to safely support all loads, including dead loads, live loads, roof loads, flood loads, snow loads, wind loads and seismic loads as prescribed by this code. The construction of buildings and structures shall result in a system that provides a complete load path capable of transferring all loads from their point of origin through the load–resisting elements to the foundation. EXCEPTION: Buildings and structures located within the High Velocity Hurricane Zone shall comply with the provisions of Chapter R44. * * * CHAPTER 4 FOUNDATIONS SECTION R401 GENERAL R401.1 Application. The provisions of this chapter shall control the design and construction of the foundation and foundation spaces for all buildings. Wood foundations shall be designed and installed in accordance with AF&PA Report No. 7. Exceptions: 1. The provisions of this chapter shall be permitted to be used for wood foundations only in the following situations: 1.1. In buildings that have no more than two floors and a roof. 1.2. When interior basement and foundation walls are provided at intervals not exceeding 50 feet. 2. In addition to the provisions of this chapter, the design and construction of foundations in areas prone to flooding as established by Table R301.2(1) shall meet the provisions of Section R323. Wood foundations in Seismic Design Categories D1 and D2 shall be designed in accordance with accepted engineering practice. 3. Buildings and structures located within the High Velocity Hurricane Zone shall comply with the provisions of Chapter R44. * * * CHAPTER 5 FLOORS SECTION R501 GENERAL R501.1 Application. The provisions of this chapter shall control the design and construction of the floors for all buildings including the floors of attic spaces used to house mechanical and/or plumbing fixtures and equipment. EXCEPTION: Buildings and structures located within the High Velocity Hurricane Zone shall comply with the provisions of Chapter R44. * * * CHAPTER 6 WALL CONSTRUCTION SECTION R601 GENERAL R601.1 Application. The provisions of this chapter shall control the design and construction of all walls and partitions for all buildings. EXCEPTION: Buildings and structures located within the High Velocity Hurricane Zone shall comply with the provisions of Chapter R44. * * * CHAPTER 7 WALL COVERING SECTION R701 GENERAL R701.1 Application. The provisions of this chapter shall control the design and construction of the interior and exterior wall covering for all buildings. EXCEPTION: Buildings and structures located within the High Velocity Hurricane Zone shall comply with the provisions of Chapter R44. * * * CHAPTER 8 ROOF–CEILING CONSTRUCTION SECTION R801 GENERAL R801.1 Application. The provisions of this chapter shall control the design and construction of the roof–ceiling system for all buildings. EXCEPTION: Buildings and structures located within the High Velocity Hurricane Zone shall comply with the provisions of Chapter R44. * * * CHAPTER 9 ROOF ASSEMBLIES SECTION R901 GENERAL R901.1 Scope. The provisions of this chapter shall govern the design, materials, construction and quality of roof assemblies.
